A 20-30 minute sketch for a friend, after a heated debate on the pros vs. cons of ewoks. For the record, I am staunchly anti-ewok. This sketch was way too fun, though. I’m really pleased with the face, although I think the rest of the fur could use some work… the original sketch is about 3″x5″, drawn with a Pentel Hybrid Technica 03 pen.
In these difficult times, I turn to the Barenaked Ladies for comfort.
(shush, you nonbelievers)
I think I’m averaging around 6 or 7 hours sleep this week… not per night, but total, since Sunday. uuurgh. Midterms, I will be glad when you are over. I’m flying back Eastwards (well… more eastwards) tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, the only thing I really have to do (other than laundry & pack) is finish up a 3d scan of a raccoon skull in rhino and rush it off to the printer. I would have had it done this morning, but I crashed around 5 am… a side effect of my “sleep when i’m dead” mentality I tend to pick up around midterms, finals, and deadlines. Everything but the nose cavity and a cheekbone is done… I’m going to try to power through it in between classes. wish me luck, internet.
In other news, here are some Work in Progress/Detail shots of a piece I did last night for an art trade my advanced drawing course is doing with a class in London. My partner sent me a blue leg, so I…. made bat tattoos for it. Naturally. This is shipping out with Clayton Merrel later this week, so I’ll make sure to get some decent scans of it beforehand. I’m working on frosted Mylar, with pen on the front and marker on the back- it’s meant to overlay on top of the original drawing, so hopefully the size at least kind of lines up.
(the toes are my favorite part.)

I did another sketch for our Downhill Derby theme while I was running the 3D scanner yesterday.
We can see a few developments here;
1.What started out as a costume design/concept sketch for me turned out looking like Clara Bow. if only.
yeah, no. sigh.
2. I don’t think we’re going to find any pop-guns that look that convincing.
3. That deer looks really funky around the center of the torso. Whoops. Let’s chalk that up the fact that they’re gonna be big stuffed monstrosities made out of the ugliest of the things we can find at goodwill.
4. I’m getting way too excited about these big stuffed deer- the fabric’s not going to be a problem (hellooooo, goodwill!) but I’m drawing a blank on what to stuff them with- if I remember correctly, stuffing is pricey. Old Pillows? Too bad it’s not dry leaf season.
The next step is to actually plan out the layout of the truck, which Tara wants to basically duct-tape together… I’m thinking we’re going to need to be a bit sturdier in our design if we want it to keep together all the way down the hill, especially once we stack all of the stuffed deer (x4 or x5) on top and then perch on it. That’s roughly 250-300 lbs the ‘truck’ will have to hold up- I’m really hoping we can find something with wheels that can already hold the weight, and then build our derby car around it. Speed is not an issue- it’s just gotta stay in one piece.
Derby is in early April. Let’s do this thing.
